While I’m posting my old assessments haha. This one was written 18 hours before its due time. I received a distinction for my efforts. umad? In hindsight, i probably could re-write and re-word this to achieve a high distinction but, eh, huzzah for the last minute.

The Dresden Dolls

scarlota-reviews:

The Dresden Dolls are an American musical duo consisting of Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione. They are from Boston, Massachusetts and their style can be either classified as dark cabaret or piano rock but the duo describes their style as “Brechtian punk cabaret”. The review will be on their self-titled debut album “The Dresden Dolls” requested by Bustling.

1. Good Day - This has to be one of their few brighter songs in the album. It should be unless they wanted to trick their audience with an ironically dismal song with an optimistic title. In the beginning of the song you here this chime on loop that sounds like it’s from a broken phonograph. This intrigued me quickly because it has this vintage lullaby vibe to it. Shortly after, Palmer begins to sing with a very soft and peaceful voice but quickly does a 180 to convey a very powerful and strong message. The line that caught my attention the most was “I’d rather be a bitch than be an ordinary broken heart”. It’s a very strong statement that I think that women (or men) would love to follow but sometimes are too scared. The ending is very comical; Girls playing jump rope whilst singing about Mussolini’s death. It’s genius!

2. Girl Anachronism - The “One, Two, Three, Four” in the beginning really scared the hell out of me. She sounded like she was about to get slaughtered my some man on the street with a knife. The song was very upbeat but the thing that I didn’t really like was that there was a bit too much of dubbing.

3. Missed MeThe piano riff in the beginning is a nice contrast to the previous song. It’s not as scary. For some reason I imagined some Marylin Monroe type figure singing this. It just reminded me so much of the “Happy Birthday” she sang to John F. Kennedy. The rhythmic changes are also really nice.

4. Half JackThis has to be one of my favorite songs of the albums. She sings so softly in the beginning but the piano foreshadows that it’s going to make a change. Palmer’s “ah ah’s” are just amazing and the song is overall prevailing. It’s extremely catchy and it was difficult for me to hate it.

5. 672 - I felt like I was losing the singer in the song. The quality was so different. I was disappointed because of the drastic change from Half Jack to 672. It’s not that great of a song and I’m not a big fan of the song.

6. Coin-Operated Boy - It’s a very uppity and fun song. This actually is my favorite song and I like it a lot more than Half Jack. I love that skipping effect it has before the bridge. I thought that something was wrong but it was just a cool effect they did. I seriously was considering skipping around the living room while listening to this. A line that was so unique was “Extract me from my plastic fantasy”. Man, does this line really make you think.

7. Gravity - This song is very strong and out there (if you get what I mean). Palmer does not hold back on this song at all. Their usage of the word “side” is amazing. She used many perceptions of that one word. And if you listen very closely to that “side” part, you can hear  Viglione  on back up vocals.

8. Bad Habit - To be honest, this song doesn’t really appeal to me. It was catchy and her vocal ups and downs are nice but I just didn’t really like it much.

9. The Perfect Fit - It starts with a lullaby sound to it. I think the first time it was nice but now it just sounds repetitive. I’ll let it slide though. Aside from that, her transition from whispering to singing so powerfully is just outstanding. I applaud Palmer on that.

10. The Jeep Song - What I love about this song is that there are two layers of her singing. Throughout most of the song you hear her talking in monotone and then you hear beautiful singing. I also this Viglione was also singing in those parts but it was really nice. It’s also very mind-boggling but you know what? It works out perfectly!

11. Slide - Sounds a bit creepy but oddly enough soothing. This is something to listen to when your life seems to hectic and you just need to slow down a bit. However, that bridge is that alarm saying “Don’t slow down too much! You have to get back to your regular routine”. It’s kind of nice but also saddening.

12. Truce - It’s such a nice title for the last song. It’s as if the duo have been at war with the audience and they’re calling “truce”. The lyrics are so meaningful and the essence of what a war sounds like. This makes us aware to how nation leaders try to compromise over land and meaningless materials. The bridge is a nice change and a very well put twist for us. The violins are also glorious in this song.

Note: Today was the first day I listened to the album and even found out of the duo. If anybody has any suggestions of an album for me to review, inbox me here.
